At Birch Tree Psychology, we provide individual therapy to preschoolers, children, and adolescents.


Preschool Therapy

Dr. Ryan-Berzins treats preschool children who have anxiety, depression, and aggressive behavior using play therapy and behavior therapy techniques. Children are assessed and treated through play, which makes treatment comfortable and fun for children. Early intervention often means that treatment is brief and issues do not become ingrained. Parents are an integral part of treatment at this stage.


Child Therapy

Dr. Berzins specializes in treating anxiety in children, such as school phobias, separation anxiety, panic attacks, obsessive-compulsive disorder, social anxiety, and specific phobias (ie: needles, blood, animals, death). He has a remarkable capacity to put people at ease, which allow them to confront and overcome their greatest fears. Dr. Berzins has conducted research on Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and works with children to develop cognitive and behavioral strategies to manage their school performance. Additionally, he works with children who how are depressed, oppositional, or are struggling to cope with loss or divorce.


Adolescent Therapy

Dr. Berzins specializes in treating anxiety in adolescents, such as school phobias, separation anxiety, panic attacks, obsessive-compulsive disorder, social anxiety, and specific phobias (ie: needles, blood, animals, death). Dr. Berzins has conducted research on Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and helps adolescent boys to develop cognitive and behavioral strategies to manage their school performance and social lives. Dr. Berzins has an extraordinary ability to connect with pre-teens and teenagers, even those who are resistant to engaging in therapy.


Dr. Ryan-Berzins works with adolescent girls who are depressed, angry, and oppositional. Adolescence is an especially challenging time for many daughters and their mothers. It can be empowering, as well as bring peace to the family when an adolescent girls has a deep sense of self-worth. Dr. Ryan-Berzins is dedicated to improving the self-image and self-worth of adolescent girls who too often devalue themselves. Additionally, Dr. Ryan-Berzins has conducted research on cutting and other self-injurious behavior and is an expert in the treatment of girls who resort to self-injury to cope with their  feelings. Intervention to address depression, anxiety, ADHD, and increase coping skills leads to lower rates of substance use and abuse, higher school achievement, and more stable relationships. Teenagers are beginning to develop a stable sense of self and it is essential to resolve psychological issues at this stage of life so they perceive themselves as happy, positive, and valuable adults.
